Mesh doek voor een watertoren als resultaat van een participatief proces, 2021 / Mesh cloth cover for a water tower as a result of a participatory process, 2021
In 2018, I initiated the artistic participatory project Wijktotem Bloemekenswijk, supported by the City of Ghent, Museum Dr. Guislain, Bloemekensforum vzw, and other partners. Throughout 2018 and 2019, I underwent a development phase together with numerous residents of the neighborhood. Surveys, brainstorms, and workshops resulted in the following concept: dressing the water tower, one of the landmarks of Greater Ghent, with a cloth to create an interaction between the textile past, the socially diverse present, and the convivial future.
The cloth, spanning over 500 m2, was realized in collaboration with partners such as Bloemekensforum vzw, printed by Fashion Graphics, and installed by Signecure. This project marks a significant milestone for both me as an artist and for the neighborhood.
The cloth, hung on August 3 and 4, 2021, is a visual representation of the diversity of the neighborhood, featuring flowers and plants found in the 33 plant street names of Bloemekenswijk. The choice of cloth as a medium pays homage to the original textile-related history of the neighborhood.
After two years, the cloth was taken down and cut into pieces. These pieces are then distributed among the residents, integrating the artwork literally and figuratively into the lives of the people in the neighborhood. Thanks to Labeur, a social employment company, the cloth takes on new forms and lives, appearing in various places in the neighborhood: as a beach chair, as a parasol, as a covering, and so forth.
In 2018 heb ik het artistiek participatief project Wijktotem Bloemekenswijk geïnitieerd, gesteund door Stad Gent, Museum Dr. Guislain, Bloemekensforum vzw en andere partners. Gedurende 2018 en 2019 doorliep ik samen met talrijke buurtbewoners een ontwikkelingsfase. Bevragingen, brainstorms en workshops resulteerden in het volgende concept: de watertoren, een van de landmarks van groot Gent, aankleden met een doek om zo een interactie te creëren tussen het textielverleden, het sociaal diverse heden en de conviviale toekomst.
Het doek van meer dan 500 m2 werd gerealiseerd in samenwerking met partners zoals Bloemekensforum vzw, gedrukt door Fashion Graphics en geïnstalleerd door Signecure. Dit project is een opvallende mijlpaal voor zowel mij als kunstenaar als voor de wijk.
Het doek, opgehangen op 3 en 4 augustus 2021, is een visuele representatie van de diversiteit van de wijk, met bloemen en planten die te vinden zijn in de 33 plantenstraatnamen van de Bloemekenswijk. De keuze voor doek als medium is een eerbetoon aan de oorspronkelijke textielgerelateerde geschiedenis van de wijk.
Na twee jaar is het doek neergehaald en in lapjes gesneden. Deze lapjes worden verdeeld onder de buurtbewoners, waardoor het kunstwerk letterlijk en figuurlijk wordt geïntegreerd in de levens van de mensen in de wijk. Dankzij Labeur, een sociaal tewerkstellingsbedrijf, krijgt het doek nieuwe vorm en leven en zal het op verschillende plaatsen in de wijk opduiken: als een strandstoel, als een parasol, als een afdekking, enzovoort.
