'The Little Stones' is an creative guided tour performed in the Brugse Poort for Bij' De Vieze Gasten.
I do work as a tour guide in Ghent and in Bruges and I am interested in the performative aspect of guiding, in learning how to look and in exploring cities. In my other projects, such as 'We Are Happy When We Make This' and 'Wijktotems Binnenstebuiten' I also play with the idea of city exploration and involving guided tours in the artistic proces. I am also interested in the ways of transformation of a guided tour into a artistic performance. 'The Little Stones' was a experiment in this direction, here I wanted to explore whether it is possible to attach a value to an object that doesn't have a value as such.
On Saturday, 30 September 2017, I went to my garden and collected a bag of stones. In an hour this stones were given to the people who joined me on a guided tour through the Brugse Poort. I told them that it is an experiment and that during the walk they will have some tasks to do with the stones. During the walk I shown a few artworks in the neighbourhood and asked the participants to squeeze the stone really hard, to imagine it is weightless, to imagine it is a part of a hand and to do a few other things. When the tour was finished I told that the experiment was about the emotional value attached to things. The participants were able to decide whether they want to keep their stones or to give them back to me.
Out of 20 stones i received 4 stones back plus 1 leaf.
